STARLING, Cyril

No.1892766, Lance Sergeant, Cyril STARLING
Aged 25

80 Assault Squadron, Royal Engineers
Killed on Active Service on Thursday, 26th October 1944

Cyril Starling was born in Isleham in 1918 (Newmarket Q4-1918 3B:667), son of Royal and Mary Ann STARLING ( née LANGLEY ).

In 1939 the family were in Maltings Lane, Isleham - father Royal [31-5-1869] a farm labourer; mother Mary A [25-12-1889]; brother Wilfred [4-2-1916] farm labourer and and sister Vera [2-5-1925]. There are 4 closed records.

Without his service records and given his regiment, it is not possible to pin point where he was killed or how. It is very likely that he was involved in the clearing of the Scheldt estuary after Antwerp had been taken. It also appears the two members of his tank crew, unlike Cyril, have identified graves in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery. The Groesbeek Memorial in situated in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery.
